Gloucestershire Walking Group

Frequently Asked Questions

DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO COME ON ONE OF YOUR WALKS?

Not initially. We welcome everyone to come along to two or three of our walks. After that, if you would like to continue walking with us, then you need to join Ramblers. If you are already a member of another Ramblers group then you are very welcome to walk with us as much as you like.

HOW DO I JOIN AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

You need to join the Ramblers after three trial walks. Membership costs £33 per year and gives you many benefits. When you join, please quote our group reference GR50 as your home group.

DO I HAVE TO BOOK ONTO A WALK OR CAN I JUST TURN UP?

There is no need to book, you can just turn up. If it’s your first walk with us then you are welcome to contact the walk leader in advance so that they know to look out for you on the day. Contact details for walk leaders are listed under each walk.

HOW MANY PEOPLE COME ON A WALK?

It varies. Usually we have between 15 and 25 people on each walk. If the sun is shining we can have more than 40, if it’s cold and wet then maybe fewer than 10! There is usually a good mix of regular members and new people.

WHO LEADS THE WALKS?

The walks are led by volunteers who are members of the Ramblers. They are not paid and are giving up their spare time to help others enjoy a walk through lovely countryside. We are always looking for new walk leaders so if you think you may like to lead a walk in the future please let us know!

WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR?

Comfortable clothing, waterproof if it’s going to be wet, and warm layers if it’s going to be cold. Remember weather forecasts are not always accurate and conditions can change quickly, so come prepared! Jeans tend to get very cold when wet so are not ideal. Most walks will take us across fields and through woods, these can be very muddy at any time of year, so good sturdy walking boots are a must.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Drinking water, packed lunch, snacks, waterproofs for if it rains, sunhat and sunscreen if it’s hot. You might also want to bring a change of shoes for after the walk, spare socks, insect repellent and a small first aid kit incase you get a blister or stung while you are walking.

DO I NEED TO BE VERY FIT?

It depends on the walk. All our walks are graded according to the Ramblers criteria. If you are not sure then it may be a good idea to start with a shorter 6 mile walk than jump straight into a 15 mile strenuous one!

CAN I BRING MY DOG?

No, sorry, pet dogs are not allowed on our walks due to problems with livestock, stiles etc. The only dogs we do accept on our walks are registered assistance dogs for disabled people.

I’M OLDER THAN THE AGE RANGE FOR THE GROUP, CAN I STILL COME?

The vast majority of GWG members are of working age and you will see that some walks are particularly for walkers in their 20s and 30s. We don’t exclude anyone from our walks, but please respect the age ranges as far as possible.

DO YOU RUN SOCIAL EVENTS AND TRIPS AWAY?

Yes, we do. We regularly offer events such as pub quizzes, ceidllihs, meals out, cinema trips, cycle rides and so on. Every year we have a very popular Christmas party and often a summer party too. We also run regular trips away, in the recent past we have been to Cornwall, Lake District, Snowdonia, Yorkshire, Dorset and Picos de Europas in Spain. Social events and trips away are run by members for members, so if you have an idea for one then please lets us know!

HOW DO YOU COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR GROUP MEMBERS?

We publish all walks and some social events on our main website gwg.org.uk. We also send out emails about social events, trips away, emergency updates to walks, for example, if they are cancelled at short notice. You are welcome to join this email list once you've walked with us, please contact the Membership Secretary if you would like to be added to the list.

I’VE SEEN YOU ON ‘MEETUP’ AND FACEBOOK, IS THIS THE SAME GROUP?

Yes, this is the same group. We have recently started advertising on meetup.com to attract new members. If you join on meetup, you are welcome to come on two or three trial walks and would then need to join Ramblers like all our other members. We also have a facebook page.

I DON’T HAVE A CAR, CAN I GET A LIFT TO AND FROM THE WALK?

Maybe! It’s not possible for us to organise a formal car sharing scheme, but if you join our meetup pages then you can post on there to see if anyone lives near you and can give you a lift.
