Introduction

All our walks are led by volunteers who are Ramblers members. If you would like to offer a walk for our programme please contact the walks programme co-ordinator. Once we have agreed a date for your walk, you can then submit your walk for us to publish using the details below.

Walk leader training

If you want to know more about leading walks and the support available from the Ramblers before you commit to the role, you can join one of the Walk Leadership by Ramblers events.  These take place regularly throughout the year and give you an opportunity to hear from an experienced Ramblers volunteer who will talk about a ‘day in the life’ of a walk leader.  You will also be able to ask questions to help you decide if it's the right role for you.
 
If you have not already been a Ramblers walk leader, to become a walk leader with the group you will need to complete the walk leader training and be registered as a walk leader on the main Ramblers website.
  • Read and sign up to the Walk Leader Handbook
  • Complete the Walk Leadership Foundations e-learning (approximately 60-90 minutes).
  • Complete the Preventing & Managing Incidents e-learning (approximately 60 minutes).
 
Also the Walk Leader Checklist is a perfect place for aspiring and new walk leaders to start.  It covers the Ramblers’ eight Guiding Principles for Leading Group Walks and it takes you through what a walk leader needs to consider when planning and leading a group walk.

Cancelling a walk you are leading

The vast majority of walks go ahead as planned. However, occasionally the weather is so bad that we have to think about whether to cancel a walk to ensure everyone’s safety. These notes have been written to help you in that event.

Getting a walk on the website

Here's how you get your walk on the website.

First, you must be a member of a member of GWG and on the Ramblers system as a walk leader so that you can select your name from the pick list on the main Ramblers site.  If your name is not on the list, you will
need to contact the GWG Walks Co-ordinator to request you be added. The Walks Co-Ordinator can alternatively add your walk for you if you provide all the details.

If you've not led a walk before, ask one of the walk planners to get you set up on the system.

When they've done that you'll get an email saying you've been set up as contributor.
